Purple Monro Urban Adventure MUA-A3 automatic watch with purple rubber strap

Urban Adventure

Integrated steel, a purple dial that changes character with the light, and enough personality to make the familiar sports-watch formula feel considerably less familiar.

The watch

Purple. Definitely purple.

Some watches reveal themselves slowly. The Monro Urban Adventure MUA-A3 introduces itself in purple and leaves very little room for administrative error.

That colour is not a novelty pasted onto an otherwise anonymous watch. The dial moves from near-black aubergine at the edge to a vivid violet through the centre, while the broad brushed case and polished bezel catch enough light to keep the steel architecture alive around it.

The result is a watch with presence without needing to be huge. At 40mm, it sits in a useful middle ground for an integrated sports design, and the purple gives it the sort of identity that becomes more interesting the longer the light is allowed to play with it.

Background

Designed by people who already knew the job.

Monro Adventure is the in-house watch brand of British design consultancy Monro Design Studio, founded by Matt O'Neill and Ryan Ould. The pair had already spent more than a decade working together within the watch industry before establishing the studio, bringing experience in design, development, production and international sales into their own project.

The first Monro Adventure GMT was successfully crowdfunded in 2023. Urban Adventure followed as the brand's integrated sports-watch family, alongside its Ocean and later Luna collections.

There is a useful clue in the name too: MONRO combines the founders' surnames, O'Neill and Ould. It is a small detail, but one that suits a brand whose watches contain rather more original design work than a quick glance at the category might suggest.

Dial & case

The dial does the talking. The case gives it a stage.

The MUA-A3 uses a sunray gradient dial, and purple is exactly the right colour to exploit it. In flat light it can look restrained and almost black around the perimeter. Move it towards a stronger source and violet blooms through the centre, sometimes as a narrow streak and sometimes across almost the whole dial.

Applied luminous indices keep the layout clean, while the date at three is framed rather than simply cut into the dial. The broad partially skeletonised handset is distinctive enough to feel like part of Monro's own design language and the white seconds hand gives the darker dial a fine visual counterpoint.

Around it sits a 316L stainless-steel case dominated by heavy brushing, with polished accents along the fixed bezel and case edges. Those changes in finish matter. They stop the 40mm case becoming one large slab of steel and give its angular shoulders considerably more definition in changing light.

Bracelet & strap

Two quite different versions of the same watch.

The steel bracelet is the natural visual continuation of the case. Broad links, alternating surfaces and the integrated-style transition give the Urban Adventure its strongest sports-watch identity. Production refinements introduced by Monro included screwed links, half-links and revised bracelet finishing, useful details on a design where fit matters.

But Monro also supplies a purple NBR rubber military-style strap, and it is far more than a box-ticking extra. The colour echoes the dial and changes the watch from polished urban sports piece into something younger and more casual almost immediately.

Quick-release fittings make that transformation painless. It is difficult to argue with a second strap when it genuinely creates a second personality rather than merely providing a spare.

On the wrist

Forty millimetres with a little swagger.

The numbers are sensible: 40mm across, 50mm lug-to-lug and 12mm thick. The case is not shy, though. Its wide shoulders and integrated styling give it more visual presence than a conventional round 40mm watch.

That works here because the proportions remain controlled. The bracelet flows directly away from the case and the dial opening is large enough that the watch never feels like a mass of steel surrounding a small face.

On the wrist, the purple also becomes less theatrical than it looks in isolated product photographs. Most of the time it reads as a deep aubergine, waiting for direct light to wake up the sunray centre. That ability to move between restrained and vivid is one of the MUA-A3's strongest tricks.

Movement

A workhorse rather than a window display.

Inside is Miyota's 8215, a long-established Japanese automatic calibre chosen here for reliability and value rather than horological theatre.

The current version hacks as well as hand-winds, carries 21 jewels, runs at 21,600 vibrations per hour and offers approximately 42 hours of power reserve. Miyota quotes a factory accuracy range of -20 to +40 seconds per day.

It is not the movement that will sell this watch, and at the Urban Adventure's £375 retail price some buyers may reasonably wish for one of Miyota's slimmer 9-series calibres. But the 8215 is familiar, robust and easy to live with. Monro also says the switch to Miyota for the production Urban line followed difficulties sourcing Seiko NH movements at the volumes it required, while fitting the brand's plans for future collections.

Value

The specification is only half the argument.

At its current £375 retail price, the Urban Adventure sits in a fiercely competitive part of the microbrand market. Sapphire, 100m water resistance, an automatic movement, quick-release steel bracelet and additional NBR strap give it the expected foundations.

What makes the stronger case is the design work. The case is not simply a circular watch dropped between integrated lugs, the handset has its own identity, the finishing uses contrast intelligently and the purple gradient dial is much more nuanced in person than a colour name can convey.

It is also individually numbered and limited to 100 pieces in this configuration. Limited numbers alone do not make a watch interesting, but here they suit a colourway that was never trying to be the safest option in the catalogue.

Verdict

Turns out purple is quite good at being an everyday colour.

The Urban Adventure could easily have become another integrated sports watch chasing a familiar silhouette. Instead, Monro has put enough of its own design language into the case, handset and detailing for the MUA-A3 to have a recognisable identity.

The Miyota 8215 is functional rather than glamorous and the 50mm lug-to-lug means this will wear with more presence than the 40mm diameter suggests. Neither point disappears simply because the dial is excellent.

But the dial is excellent. Add the finishing, the genuinely useful second strap and 100m water resistance, and this becomes a convincing daily watch with considerably more character than the phrase “integrated sports watch” might imply.

The purple gets your attention. The rest of the watch gives you a reason to keep looking.

One Last Thing

Apparently the bracelet needs planning permission.

The review was finished. Then the council arrived.

One City inspector, one construction worker, a magnifying glass and a spanner now stand between the Urban Adventure and final approval. The case has been examined. The integrated bracelet appears structurally sound. Nobody has yet explained why the worker brought tools.

The purple dial passed immediately. Obviously.

a final shot that reminds you watches can still be fun.
